Way to Win Calls on Florida Governor To Veto New Poll Tax & Uphold the Will of Florida Voters
Austin, Texas - During the 2018 Midterms, Way to Win—the women-led homebase for people, money, and ideas upending politics as usual—moved millions to help pass Amendment 4, a ballot initiative restoring the right to vote for an estimated 1.4 million formerly incarcerated Floridians. This historic victory marked the most significant potential to expand the electorate since the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote in 1920.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is trying to subvert the will of Florida voters who overwhelmingly supported Amendment 4, announcing he would sign SB 7066 that will require new voters to pay all legal-associated financial obligations, or restitution, before they can vote again. Tory Gavito, President and Co-Founder of Way to Win, issued the following statement today denouncing Governor DeSantis’ racist proposal and calls on the Governor to veto the bill:
“Governor DeSantis is not only ignoring the will of Floridians, he’s instituting a racist modern-day poll tax. It’s all part of his and Republicans’ broader strategy to keep people of color and others who have been disproportionately targeted by our broken criminal justice system from exercising their right to vote.”
“There are millions of people across the country who owe money, taxes, and fees who have the right to vote, as they should. This is yet another attempt on the part of Republicans to self-select the electorate they want to consolidate their political power. This craven strategy couldn’t be more transparent in Florida, a perpetual battleground state where DeSantis won by fewer than 35,000 votes, where strong multiracial coalitions have the power to oust him when he’s up for re-election.”
