Way to Win Stands With Texas Civil Rights Groups in Opposing Partisan Redistricting
Austin, Texas - Way to Win—the homebase for people, money, and ideas upending politics as usual—invests in key organizations, candidates, and initiatives at the national, state, and local level that are critical to building a reflective democracy that improves people’s lives.
After a multi-year fight over Texas’s electoral maps and the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to allow partisan gerrymandering, a panel of federal judges on Wednesday denied the requests of voting rights groups to put Texas back under federal supervision of its redistricting. Texas will avoid supervision despite evidence showing intentional discrimation toward districts of communities of color. These practices, adopted by Republican state legislators, remain a major cause for concern, especially as Texas continues to experience demographic changes. Tory Gavito, President and Co-Founder of Way to Win, issued the following statement today denouncing the federal judges’ decision:
“What’s happening here is a racist effort to silence communities of color. Unconstitutional redistricting efforts show just how terrified Republicans are of the rising, progressive majority of voters participating in our state's politics.
“The Trump Administration’s approach to appointing judges is one of the greatest threats to voting rights that we’ve ever seen. The Republican Party’s priority is not to ensure democracy, it’s to bludgeon it. We look forward to supporting the coalition of state-based advocacy organizations in their appeal to the Supreme Court.”
