Way to Win Calls for New Voting Rights Act After Recent Report Highlighting Increase in Voter Purges Nationwide

Washington, DC - Way to Win—the homebase for people, money, and ideas upending politics as usual—invests in key organizations, candidates, and initiatives at the national, state, and local level that are critical to building a reflective democracy that improves people’s lives. Way to Win provided critical early funding to help approve Florida’s Amendment 4, which restored the voting rights to more than 1.4 million Floridians—the largest expansion of the right to vote since the Civil Rights era.

According to a new report published by the Brennan Center for Justice released last week, at least 17 million Americans voters were removed from the voter rolls between 2016 and 2018. The research shows that after the Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision—which gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act in 2013—certain jurisdictions with a history of racial discrimination more aggressively removed people from the voting rolls. The report finds that jurisdictions that were previously subject to Section 5 regulation now remove voters from the rolls at a 40 percent higher median rate than other jurisdictions. Kellie Dupree, Director of Political Strategy at Way to Win, issued the following statement today calling to increase national and state-based voter protections:

“We know when more people vote, especially communities of color, Republicans lose. A central goal of modern Republican political strategy is rooted in racism and discrimination, as evidenced by their efforts to stack the courts with judges to uphold voter suppression efforts. Today, we’re seeing local and state Republican officials taking advantage of a lack of federal oversight to purge voting rolls.

“Now is the time for a new Voting Rights Act to restore core voting protections so all Americans can access their right to the franchise. Not only must we elect candidates working to improve people’s lives, we must also continue to advocate for state-based reforms like automatic voter registration, voting rights restoration, and election day registration so more people participate in our democracy. It’s no coincidence this is happening now, and we must fight these efforts attempting to silence our communities.”
